The Palm Springs Fire Department issued a safety advisory urging residents and visitors to use extreme caution when hiking during the summer months.

The department said it has seen an increase in hiker rescue calls as temperatures continue to rise. It warned that hiking during extreme heat can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other life-threatening conditions.

The department advised hikers to plan ahead and to avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day. It recommended hiking early in the morning and avoiding peak afternoon heat, carrying plenty of water and drinking regularly, and wearing sunscreen, a hat, and lightweight clothing.

It also advised hikers to hike with a partner, bring a fully charged phone, and turn back if conditions become too difficult. The department said heat-related illnesses can develop rapidly and become life-threatening, and that emergency responders routinely assist hikers during summer months who are suffering from dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

The department listed possible symptoms that may include dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, or fatigue. It said that if symptoms occur, people should stop immediately, seek shade, hydrate, and turn back.
